A total area of five soccer fields, 19,000 m2 cooling zone. 600,000 tons throughput per year - these are the impressive facts of the cargo terminal for Ethiopian Airlines. Unitechnik engineers designed and constructed the Addis Ababa airport facility. On the 29th of June 2017, Ethiopian Airlines officially put the facility into operation.
The Unitechnik project leaders joined the opening ceremony, among them Managing Director Torsten Ley, Sales Director Michael Huhn and Project Manager Sebastian Sommer. "Planning and realizing a project of this complexity outside of Europe is always an exciting challenge. We are delighted to see the facility open for business. Important impulses will radiate from the facility to the entire Ethiopian economy and infrastructure", stated Torsten Ley during the opening celebrations. Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, and Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn also emphasized the great significance of the terminal for the African continent.
The cargo terminal with its total area of 38,000 m² is the largest and most modern terminal of its kind in Africa. The opening marks one more step toward establishing Addis Ababa as international cargo hub. Among other facilities, the terminal comprises two automated storage facilities for air freight containers (unit load devices, ULDs) with enough space for 1,000 containers of 10-feet capacity. The cargo project was the first one under the flag of ACUNIS, which is a joint venture of AMOVA and Unitechnik Systems. AMOVA contributed the mechanics for the cargo handling system.
